MEDC had the pleasure of touring CommonWealth Kitchen with one of the regional economic development groups we participate in. We brought along a couple of our friends from Kennedy's Restaurant & Market to learn with us.

 

The efforts the CWK team is putting forth to help small businesses achieve their desired success while being able to help farms & the community around them is truly inspiring!

Aero Coffee Roasters Coming to Marlborough
 

Aero Coffee Roasters, known for its artisan brews, baked goods, and strong community vibe, is opening a second location—this time at 303 Lincoln St., inside the city's newest mixed-use luxury apartment complex, Alta French Hill.

 

After five successful years in Northborough, the expansion marks a warm and welcoming step into Marlborough’s growing landscape of local businesses.

Lost Shoe Secures Partial Use of City Hall Plaza

 

Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company will be allowed to use a portion of the recently completed Gold Star Family Plaza for outdoor dining, adding to its existing outdoor dining space along Weed Street. The decision follows an executive order from the mayor, and approval by the City Council relating to outdoor dining in the post-pandemic era. Meanwhile, Flying Dreams Brewing at 277 Main Street also received approval to expand its outdoor seating into nearby parking spaces on Rawlins Avenue.

Boston Scientific Named Best Public Companies To Work For
 
Three Central Massachusetts companies have earned national recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025–2026 Best Public Companies to Work For. Marlborough based - Boston Scientific, The Hanover Insurance Group (Worcester) and Definitive Healthcare (Framingham) were the only local firms named among 299 standout employers across the country. Boston Scientific received high scores for stability, pay quality, and professional development—and was also celebrated as a top internship provider.
Marlborough Employers Make Newsweek’s List of America’s Greenest Companies
 
Newsweek partnered with Plant-A Insights and GIST Impact to highlight the top companies making an effort to address the global climate crisis. Marlborough based companies including Hologic, IPG Photonics, Moderna and Repligen all made that list. Check out the full list below. 
 
 
Hologic Joins NEST Governance Committee to Advance the Use of Real-World Data in Medical Device Evaluation
 
Hologic has joined the Governance Committee of NEST, a key initiative under the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC). NEST aims to accelerate patient access to medical innovations by collecting and using real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) throughout a device’s lifecycle.
 
The Governance Committee guides NEST on what projects to prioritize, ensuring that RWE is gathered responsibly, inclusively, transparently, and with the needs of patients in mind. Hologic’s involvement is expected to help bring new technologies to patients faster, steer RWE methods for device approval, and strengthen patient-centered approaches in regulatory decisions.
M&T Bank Leases Former Berkshire Bank Location on Maple Street
 
According to CoStar, M&T Bank has signed a ten year lease at 322 Maple Street. Berkshire Bank previously occupied the space until their company downsized in 2023.

Thanks For The Memories: Chez Siam Wraps Up a Delicious Chapter
 
Since August 1986, Chez Siam has been providing the community of Marlborough with authentic and modern Thai food. As of last week, the Sperou family made the decision to close this chapter of their lives after 39 great years of service and great cuisine!
 
Thank you Chez Siam for your impact in serving our community and good luck in all your future endeavors!
STATE AND REGIONAL UPDATES

New Economic Development Secretary Named to EOED

 
Governor Maura Healey announced that Eric Paley is the new Secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED). Paley is a highly successful entrepreneur and leader who is stepping away from managing one of the world’s highest-performing seed-stage venture capital funds, Founder Collective. 
 
 

Massachusetts & MLSC Announce Funding to Create Life Sciences Training Opportunities 

 

The Healey-Driscoll Administration has announced $7.2 million in funding to support life sciences job training. The money will create 656 new training opportunities through the Pathmaker program, which helps people prepare for entry-level jobs in labs, biomanufacturing, and medical technology. Ten organizations across the state received grants to run short, hands-on training programs. This effort is part of a broader plan called MassTalent, aimed at building a skilled, diverse workforce to support the growing life sciences industry in Massachusetts. The state has invested nearly $1 billion in similar programs since 2007 to strengthen its leadership in the field.

 

Mass Life Sciences Center Announces 16th Round of Tax Incentive Program

 

The MLSC launched a new cycle of it's preexisting tax incentive program. This offers tax credits to businesses of all sizes that commit to creating and retaining long-term jobs in the state. The program is ideal for life sciences firms planning to expand or locate R&D, manufacturing, or commercialization efforts in Massachusetts with new job creation.

I-495/MetroWest Economy Holds Strong 

 

A new report from the 495/MetroWest Partnership offers insights into how regional employers are faring and their outlook on the economy. The Partnership is a public-private alliance of businesses, municipalities, and stakeholders committed to fostering sustainable growth—covers 36 cities and towns along the I-495 corridor in Massachusetts.

 

According to the 495/MetroWest Partnership’s latest Employer Survey, confidence is surprisingly strong—nearly half expect revenue growth, and almost 40% plan to hire despite economic uncertainty. Larger businesses are especially optimistic, while small businesses report some concerns around tariffs and revenue performance.

 

The survey also serves as a tool for lawmakers, helping them assess the economic landscape and challenges facing the I-495/MetroWest region.

City Approves Tax Agreement for State Police Crime Lab
 
The Marlborough City Council approved a 20-year Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreement with Greatland Realty Partners and the Massachusetts State Police, securing the new construction of a 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art crime lab at 100 Martinangelo Drive. The proposed project will bring 307 permanent, full-time jobs to Marlborough with a $200 million investment in the site. 
 
The TIF was approved by the full City Council on June 9.
City Council Holds Public Hearing For Marijuana Testing Facility  
 
A public hearing was held on June 9 for Green Armory Laboratories Inc. to operate an independent marijuana testing facility at 260 Cedar Hill Street. The special permit application is now with the Urban Affairs Committee. Catch the replay of the public hearing below.
Special Permit Submitted for 130 Lizotte Drive  
 
A special permit was submitted to the Marlborough City Council on June 9 for a multi-family housing project that would convert the existing vacant office building at 130 Lizotte Drive into 74 residential units. The project also includes the construction of two new buildings on existing parking areas off Lizotte Drive for a total of 113 units. The project would total 187 units, all for-sale condos with surface level parking and 100 additional spaces under the new buildings. The proposed project will now go before the Urban Affairs Committee with a public hearing scheduled for July 21.
City Council Holds Hearing for Ames Village Overlay District
 
The city council held a public hearing on June 9th for a Proposed Zoning Amendment to Chapter 650 "Zoning" to create the "Ames Village Overlay District" (AOD). This would allow for the construction of market-rate and affordable-rate multi-family condominiums within the boundaries of the district. Catch the replay of the June 9th hearing below. The Planning Board of the city will hold a public hearing on Monday July 21st. 
City Council Approves Marlborough Hospital Expansion

 

Marlborough Hospital received approval from the Marlborough City Council to move forward with an 8,000-square-foot expansion of the Emergency Department, in addition to being able to add proton therapy to the site. We are excited to see the first phase of this expansion which includes an additional 14 treatment rooms and a new $6 million Multidisciplinary Clinic.

City Council Denies Car Wash Proposal

 

During the City Council meeting on June 23rd, a special permit application by Washville Car Wash, to convert the former Bank of America site at 223 East Main Street into a new car wash facility was denied. Pools, Splash Pads & Beach Open

 

Summer has officially arrived in Marlborough! The city's Wading Pools, Splash Pads, and Memorial Beach are now open. Cool off at any of these great locations.

COMING UP IN MARLBOROUGH
Williams Tavern Honored in Nation's 250th Anniversary
 
The Williams Tavern Historic Marker was recently restored through efforts of the Marlborough Historical Commission and the Marlborough Department of Public Works. The Marlborough Revolution 250 Committee has more programming planned to celebrate this lost treasure as well as the unique role Marlborough played in America's independence. 
Marlborough Historical Society Sells Bricks for Boyd Park
 
The Marlborough Historical Society is commissioning a statue of Samuel Boyd, known as "The Father of Marlborough", and inviting the public to purchase engraved bricks to be placed around the statue.
 
The statue will be located in Boyd Park at the corner of Main and South Bolton Streets, honoring Boyd's contributions to the cityincluding his ownership of "The Boyd and Cory Factory", the largest shoe factory in Marlborough.
