Economic Development Toolbox
Vibes Candles was awarded an MEDC Toolbox Grant from the Marlborough Amenities Program to launch a brick and mortar retail store on Main Street. We are excited to welcome Lex, owner, creator and resident to the downtown business community. Shop local for high-quality handmade candles, incense, wax melts, reed diffusers, bath and body products, and MORE!

Halie Jean Aesthetics was awarded an MEDC Toolbox Grant from the Marlborough Rental Assistance Program to help with a new business endeavor. Halie is a resident, RN and certified aesthetic nurse that will soon have her own practice on Boston Post Rd West providing medical aesthetic procedures including injectable services.

MA Governor's Conference on Travel & Tourism
MEDC participated in the MA Governor's Conference on Travel and Tourism, joined by our partners at the 495/MetroWest Partnership and the MetroWest Boston Visitors Bureau.
The event included a full day of learning, networking, & celebrating! Did you know that tourism is the 3rd largest industry in the state making it an important economic development tool for the City of Marlborough & MetroWest!?!

MassEcon Economic Impact Awards
MEDC attended the MassEcon Economic Impact Awards with Mayor Dumais and MEDC Board Chair Andrea Pion at Gillette Stadium to support several projects making a difference in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through expansions, innovation and job creation. We were proud to sponsor this important economic development event with so many of our partners across the state!

State House Day!
MEDC attended the 495/MetroWest Partnership State House Day. Speakers included Senate President Karen E. Spilka, Speaker Pro Tem Kate Hogan, Marlborough Legislative Delegation Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Danielle Gregoire, as well as Secretary Yvonne Hao from the Executive Office of Economic Development.

Meredith Harris Shares Support for the Mass Leads Act

MEDC Executive Director, Meredith Harris shares the economic impact the Mass Leads Act will have on Central Mass communities and specifically Marlborough.
“What we do everyday is try to attract and retain business to the community, and the Leads Act just seems to continue to enable that and gives us more tools in our tool box when we’re out trying to attract companies to Central Mass. and specifically to Marlborough,” Harris said.

The Downtown Pop-Up Shops are getting ready to open this month!! These small business incubators located on Weed Street offer local makers, artists and small businesses an opportunity to host a temporary storefront in the Marlborough Downtown Village at no charge to the user. With over 20 unique vendors last season, we are hopeful for the continued success of this program in 2024.

New Location!
Word on the Street bookstore has moved to 162 Main Street. The bookstore is also a recipient of an MEDC Toolbox grant from the Marlborough Amenities Program. The grant helped the owner, Alyson Cox, move and expand into a larger retail space allowing her to grow the business.
The new store includes additional offerings of children's books and programming, along with books and products for adults. Visit the new spot and shop local!

The Purple Pig Takeout & Catering is recently new to Marlborough. The restaurant has been opened by Executive Chef Michael Winslett who has 30 years of experience in the industry. FY25 Destination Development Capital Grants Now Open
The Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED) through the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) is committed to helping communities contribute to the long-term strength and sustainability of the Commonwealth. The FY25 Destination Development Capital Grant Program is a competitive grant program that will award funds to improve facilities and destinations visited by in state and out-of-state travelers, with the goals of increasing visitation, enticing repeat visitation, and increasing the direct and indirect economic impacts of the tourism industry in all regions of the commonwealth. |

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) Angel Investor Tax Credit program is open to investors interested in funding early-stage companies engaged in life sciences research and development, commercialization and manufacturing in Massachusetts. |

495/Metrowest Partnership
495/Metrowest Partnership annual Employer Survey will be open until May 17th!
The survey represents a collaborative effort between the 495/MetroWest Partnership and Framingham State University's MetroWest Economic Research Center (MERC). Over the past decade, the survey has proven to be an important tool in gauging business confidence in the 495/MetroWest region. Now being conducted for the 11th year running, the survey is an opportunity for our region’s employers to communicate concerns and challenges, which can guide policymakers in considering needed changes and investments. The survey is also an important tool in forecasting future growth by regional employers, and in identifying warning signs of challenges to come.

Lizotte Drive Overlay District
The City Council held a Public Hearing on the Proposed Zoning Amendment to Code, Chapter 650 "Zoning" to create the Lizotte Drive Overlay District (LDOD).
The zoning amendment was brought forth by Ferris Development Group. Ferris is asking the City of Marlborough to create the LDOD, which would allow for the conversion of 130 Lizotte Drive, a long-vacant office building, into an 180-unit apartment complex and construction of self-service storage facilities for the use by people in the trades and the public.
The proposal will now go to the Urban Affairs Committee.

Donald Lynch Boulevard Re-Zoning
The City Council is reviewing a Proposed Zoning Amendment to Chapter 650 "Zoning" to create a new zoning district for the Donald Lynch Boulevard corridor. The Council will hold a Public Hearing during the May 20th City Council meeting at 8pm.
The purpose of rezoning Donald Lynch Boulevard is to enhance land use development and strengthen the vitality of the district by encouraging uses, activities, and improvements that will complement the existing assets.

Mass Leads Act
Governor Healey filed the Mass Leads Act, her administration’s economic development bond bill that will strengthen Massachusetts’ global leadership in life sciences and launching game-changing investments in climatetech and applied artificial intelligence (AI). Governor Healey announced that the bill includes a 10-year reauthorization of the transformative Life Science Initiative, as well as a new 10-year investment in climatetech to compete in the emerging clean energy sector.
In addition to positioning Massachusetts as a global hub for these innovative sectors, the bill also proposes support for small businesses, rural communities, workforce development, and arts and culture.
This omnibus bill is central to a 10-year economic development strategy to execute the vision outlined in the administration’s 2023 economic development plan:
