City Council President Mike Ossing joined for Episode 41 of Exploring Economic Development with MEDC to dig into the recent tax rate decrease and explained what to expect from City Council in 2024. 

Getting to know Mayor J. Christian Dumais | EED with MEDC

 

Mayor J. Christian Dumais joins us for Episode 42 of Exploring Economic Development with MEDC on February 7 at 10 A.M. to discuss his first 30 days in office, priorities for the administration and why Marlborough is the city to watch.

 
2023 MEDC Annual Report 
 

Our Annual Board Meeting was held in January where we shared the 2023 Annual Report highlighting the economic indicators and projects that illustrate the City of Marlborough’s recent successes. The report also outlines the various initiatives which the organization has been doing to help bring new companies to Marlborough and supporting local businesses.

 

We look forward to continuing our efforts in promoting Marlborough as the premier place to live, work, play, visit and invest in!

Board Member Spotlight 
 

MEDC Board of Directors Spotlight is a series put together to introduce members serving on our Board of Directors. The goal is to provide insight into the different members that make up our board from large corporations to small businesses who call Marlborough home.

 

Our first Board Member is Andrea Pion, Vice President of National Client Programs at the Davis Companies, a Marlborough based staffing firm. Andrea has served on the MEDC board since 2016 and was elected Chair in 2018.

Marlborough Companies Named 2024 Best of Business Award Winners

The Worcester Business Journal named the 2024 Best of Business Award Winners, and many Marlborough businesses were recognized including Digital Credit Federal Union, Apex Entertainment, Venture X Marlborough, The Davis Companies and Sullivan Benefits.

 

Congratulations to Cinch I.T., Engraveables and Gemini Signs for being recognized as notable runners-up.

 

And Congratulations to the City of Marlborough for being named as a runner-up for the Best Community for Business!

 

Fresh Village - Bolton Street recognized as top convenience store in New England

Fresh Village located on Bolton Street was named the top convenience store in New England by New England Convenience Store and Energy Marketers Association (NECSEMA). Owner Peter Diarbakerly and his team were recognized for their exceptional service to the Marlborough community. The store’s commitment to cleanliness, fresh and healthy food options set Fresh Village apart.

Solomon Pond Mall Donates to Local Charities  

 

Solomon Pond Mall located on Donald Lynch Boulevard donated over $200,000 in new merchandise to charities in the Metrowest Area including Sweats for Vets, a Marlborough charity providing sweatshirts to homeless veterans across New England and United Way of Tri-County who serve Marlborough through the Community Cupboard. The Marlborough Community Cupboard supports residents with numerous programs and services.

Lucas Lima Barbers & Beauty - Autism Welcoming Certified Business 

Lucas Lima Barbers and Beauty, located at 38 Main Street was featured by Metrowest Daily News for their accommodations they offer as an autism-welcoming certified business. These accommodations include lowering the volume of music or having lights dimmed.

 

Other Marlborough businesses who offer sensory and behavioral accommodations include Apex Entertainment, Altitude, Regal Cinemas and Plaster Fun Time which are certified by Autism Alliance.

Marlborough-Based Company ReWalk rebrands as Lifeward
 

Medical device-firm ReWalk has announced its new branding and will do business as Lifeward. Lifeward designs and develops life-changing solutions to assist those in the care of physical rehabilitation and recovery as well as change the lives of individuals with physical limitations and disabilities.

Solomon Pond Mall
 

A variety of new stores recently opened at Solomon Pond Mall including Let’s Gourmet Sweets serving traditional Brazilian desserts, Custom World where you can customize your own design on T-shirts and other apparel, Hi Beauty Siluet sells a wide variety of women products and Shoe Supply, a shoe and clothing retailer specializing in designer fashion.

Boston Scientific purchases Axonics Inc. 

 

Boston Scientific reached an agreement with Axonics Inc. – a California based company specializing in medical devices to treat urinary and bowel dysfunction. This purchase allows Boston Scientific to strengthen their urology business.

Scitara Partners with Waters Corporation 

 

Scitara, an leading innovator in laboratory digital transformation unveiled an agreement with Water’s Corporation, a global leader in analytical instruments and software. The agreement will provide labs with integrated software and infrastructure solutions to help streamline workflows and accelerate product development.

STATE AND REGIONAL UPDATES
495/Metrowest Partnership
 

495/Metrowest Partnership recently released their updated vision/priority statements for transportation in the 495/Metrowest area including their vision and priorities for roadway improvements and improved regional transit authority service.

 

Roadway Improvements priorities include supporting municipalities in addressing roadway concerns and support Chapter 90 funding. Chapter 90 funding provides municipalities with annual funding for improvements and to invest in transportation.

 

Regional Transit Authority Service Improvement priorities include increasing service levels with more midday, nighttime, and weekend service, providing service that is reliable, affordable and accessible for all riders and to enhance opportunities for employers, municipalities and mobility-as-a-service providers to collaborate on workforce transit solutions.

Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) Tax Incentive Program
 

Applications for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) Tax Incentive Program are now available. This program is opened to companies engaged in life sciences research and development, commercialization and manufacturing in Massachusetts. The program provides incentives to all companies of any size looking to expand their efforts and create long-term jobs.

MA Economic Development Plan
 

The Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Executive Office of Economic Development revealed their economic development plan: Team Massachusetts: Leading Future Generations. The plan reflects priorities for the administration over the next four years including retaining and attracting the best talent as well as supporting businesses that influence our economy.   

WHAT WE'RE FOLLOWING
Municipal Empowerment Act 
 

In January, Governor Healey filed the Municipal Empowerment Act, a bill intended to strengthen and arm municipalities with tools and support flexibility. The Municipal Empowerment Act would make permanent several pandemic-era allowances for remote or hybrid meetings as well as outdoor dining. It would allow cities and towns to increase local-meals and lodging taxes and create a new local-option motor vehicle excise tax charge. In addition, the bill would strengthen municipal finances, address workforce challenges and improve efficiency of local municipal operations.
